I haven't forgotten that I am woefully overdue with producing a proper "Recently Read" digest, honestly :-)
I have been fortunate enough to have quite a few digital ebooks allotted to me to review as well as a mountain of "real" books from recent hauls at charity shops, and as I am largely occupied in looking after Mum, my reading time is generally when all the chores have been done and Mum is sleeping.
Many of my digital books for review are via NetGalley and if you already review books on your blogs, it is worth checking them out to see if the books they have are in genres you might enjoy. Many of the digital books are in time-limited format, rather like borrowing ebooks from your local library, but it is rather nice to read books that you can't yet buy for another six months ! I would not choose to request a book that I know I will definitely not enjoy. No horror fiction for me :-)
Mum has had another chest infection, and she seems to be slowly making some headway now with the benefit of heavy-duty antibiotic tablets after giving us a very anxious forty eight hours......
We also had news today that an elderly friend died peacefully last night after a severe but short illness. To the devoted servant of God, Gwyn - Memory Eternal !

Weather and Suchlike.
Hi all.
The weather here continues cold and gloriously sunny. It was cold enough last night ( minus 2C or 28degrees F) for me to don my thermal vest today :-)
Warmest temperature today was 44 degrees F. Nice if you are standing in the sunny side of the street, chilly if you weren't :-) We have a pretty temperate climate here, though N Ireland and Scotland can be a lot colder than Wales.
Today I went to a "Welsh for Parents" class. There were five of us plus the tutor, but imagine my consternation to find that one of the class members was someone who taught me when I was at school........... the class was great fun, and I am looking forward to returning next week.
On the reading front, I have onloan from the library Cesar Millan's ( the dog whisperer) "Cesar's Way". I also have "An Island Parish" about life on the Isles of Scilly, which are very isolated off the coast of Cornwall.
Also re-reading Ellis Peters' "Summer of the Danes", so I have plenty to keep me occupied !

The Year Of Living Biblically
Has anybody read this book yet ?
I have read reviews of it and it looks extremely interesting, not to mention amusing, in places. It is apparently not being released in the UK till 1st March.
It would not have dawned on me before to consider the potential difficulties of living an observant Orthodox Jewish lifestyle in Manhattan, especially the prohibition against men sitting on anything which has been sat upon by a menstruating woman. Sitting on public transport is therefore a no-no.........
Excerpts and more info here.
Perhaps we could do a communal book, The Year Of Living Orthodox Christianity :-)

Beedle The Bard
Lots of pictures and information about J K Rowling's handwritten book "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" can be found here.
It looks wonderful.
What a shame that no facimile copy of this is likely to be published for many years, if ever.......

Two Books
I am reading two books at the moment, both of them riveting and as different from each other as chalk and cheese.
One is Metropolitan Anthony Bloom`s "Living Prayer", the other is Mark Pinsky`s "The Gospel according to The Simpsons".
From Metropolitan Anthony :
"Theophan the Recluse says:`You ask yourself, "Have I prayed well today?". Do not try to find out how deep your emotions were, or how much deeper you understand things divine; ask yourself: "Am I doing God`s will better than I did before?" If you are, prayer has brought forth its fruits, if you are not, it has not, whatever amount of understanding or feeling you may have derived from the time spent in the presence of God."
Ouch. That struck home. I don`t think I am doing God`s will better than before.
I think I have a long way to go.
On a lighter note,The Simpsons book is a detailed critique of the "spiritual life of the world`s most animated family", and covers every aspect of the show, from its treatment of Hindus, Jews, Catholics, Fundamentalist protestants, moral dilemmas, personal prayer and much more. Impossible to find short quotes from without destroying the flow of the text:-( but I am really enjoying it.
