Guitar Versus Gregorian

Interesting to read this morning that the Pope wants guitars and tambourines etc to be removed from use in liturgical music, and advocates the restoration of Gregorian Chant for the Mass.

About time too :-)

Can you imagine our glorious Liturgy accompanied by guitars ? Shudder.

The Pope's supporters argue that the music played during Mass is a vital part of the communion between worshippers and God, and that medieval church music, with the liturgy, creates the correct ambience for perceiving God's mystery.

I have a problem with this. There is not one iota of difference between this and the guitars and tambourines. Even though it involves the use of bread and wine, the Church is not a fine dining establishment in need of ambience.

There is nothing intrinsically more holy about Gregorian chant than the Graham Kendrick compositions in the hymnal at the local Catholic parish here.

There is an iota of difference between these and the Eight Tones, though IMHO it is not much more than that. The Tones themselves, and their rotational use, play a liturgical role in the music of the Church. I think this is greatly overplayed and usually an instance of where safety has become tradition which has become Tradition.
